Historical Background

Sankhali is surrounded by rivers and mountains. Cause of it Sankhali had seen many rulers and administrators in the past who had always wanted to keep Sankhali with themselves as it plays major role in strategic management and was one of the main trade route. Sankhali had a fort which was important for trade as it was at river side and big ships used unload their cargo and trader is to trade in different parts of Hindustan. So if one gets control of the Sankhali then he can also control the trade routes. Rulers like Prabhu Sardesai of Bhatgram, Adil Shah of Bijapur, Bhosale of Sawantwadi, Chhatrapati of Maratha and Portuguese tried to take the charge. Prabhu Sardesai of Bhatgram are the oldest ruler of Sankhali and they are having their Raj Sadarr at Maulantwadi where they still perform ritual for the betterment of Sankhali. 

Introduction

Hi readers, welcome to my blog. This is my first blog and I am going to write things which I observed in my birth place " Sankhali ". Sankhali is a town situated in Bicholim taluka of District North Goa . Sankhali is surrounded by river, mountains and many villages. Sankhali is a junction for three taluka i.e Bicholim, Sattari and Ponda. Cause of this, town got its name Sankhali  means  The Chain  in Marathi. There are many temples in Sankhali but there are few main temples which is important to for the people of Sankhali. Shantadurga Kelbai Devi Mandir at Gauthan, Vithal Rakhumai Mandir at Vithalapur, Datta Mandir at Dattawadi, Radha Krishna Mandir at Gokulwadi and Shiva Rudreshwar Mandir at Harvalem. Sankhali also has archeological site at Harvale called Pandav caves and Harvale Waterfall.  Some people also called sankhali as 'Dev Bhumi' means  Land of God.  Here in town you can see building having both Maratha and Portuguese style architecture.
